  1. What is a Princesse Pearl "Starter" Necklace?
    Cultured Pearl starter necklace

This is an excellent way to start a cultured pearl strand. Just select a Princesse starter strand and add as many pearls as you like, whenever you choose. These starter strands make wonderful gifts for Birthdays, Graduations, the Holidays, Bat Mitzvahs, Communion, Confirmation, or any other special occasion. A 16 or 18 inch 14K yellow or white gold chain is attached to the finest quality cultured pearls, which are hand strung on pure silk.

Choose the pearl size for your starter strand and add pearls whenever you like. The available sizes of pearls are featured above (3mm to 8mm). Whether you choose a graduated (above) or a uniform (below) strand, you can be assured that the pearls you buy today will match in size and hue, the pearls you buy years from now. Give a gift that will grow with time.

You or your family members can purchase additional pearls for any occasion through Reid and Todd Jewelers. Once you have accumulated a number of pearls you may take them to your local jeweler to have them restrung or you may send them to us at Reid and Todd to have them done.

We strongly recommend using only Princesse Pearls because the Princess Plus/Legacy program uses the finest grade pearls, which feature a deep rose and a thick nacre coating. Princesse are the finest grade but keep in mind there is no nationally recognized grading system in place.  The Princess grading system only applies to Princess pearls and should not be confused or substituted for any other jewelers pearl grading system.

All of the Princess Pearls are carefully selected from the best Akoya hanks to ensure uniform color and quality as pearls are added over the years.  We carry Princess pearls and have for almost 100 years because we believe they are the absolute best.  See our pearl selection at here.

  2. How does the Princesse Pearl program work?
Once the "starter" necklace is obtained, Princesse pearls are purchased regularly for life's special celebrations.  After several pearls are collected, they can be added (strung) onto the Princesse starter necklace by a qualified jeweler.  The pearls should be strung with silk and each pearl should have a knot between it.  This is done so that, in the rare event of a break, you do not lose your valuable pearls.  It keeps them on the necklace and not scattered about, as well as keeping the pearls from rubbing up against each other, causing wear after many years.

  3. What pearl sizes are available?

Princesse Cultured pearls are the perfect way to preserve memories of special occasions. Over the last six decades, Princesse pearls have gained a reputation as the finest in the industry. Our assurance of superior quality and consistency in matching the product is one that customers rely on.

Giving a beautiful Princesse necklace is as easy as it is affordable. Pearls are added a few at a time or several inches at once.  Sizes range from 2mm up to 9mm.  The most common are 6mm.  The 2mm are very, very small and can be fragile because, in order to be strung, a whole is drilled through the pearls.  This is very difficult on such a small pearl.

There are two types of necklaces - Graduated and Uniform.

See our pearl selection at here.

  6. Will my pearls match year after year?
Yes, there are many programs like Princesse Add-A-Pearl program but no one carries a higher quality pearl or carries the same consistent quality pearls year after year.  The Princesse Add-A-Pearl program has been in existence since 1908.  Princesse Pearls are guaranteed to match in size and quality from year to year.  If you purchased a pearl years ago and one again today, they will be the same size and high quality.

  8. Is it more expensive to build a necklace instead of purchasing a completed one?

There may be a slight increase when you build it over time verses buying completed, but that is what makes your thoughtfulness especially appreciated.  This will also help you spread out your large expense over time.  The end result is the same...a beautiful pearl necklace that will be handed down from generation to generation.

We have had several clients start necklaces at the birth of their daughter, godchild, niece or granddaughter and build, over time, a full 18 inch completed necklace for High School or College graduation.  It is a terrific gift that completes with the special celebrations over the years.

  9. Can I mix Princesse Pearls with other pearl programs?
Because there is no internationally recognized grading system for pearls, it is strongly recommended that you stay with whatever pearl program you begin with.  Princesse pearls, however, are guaranteed to match from beginning to completion.  The Princesses Plus/Legacy Pearl program has been in existence since 1908 and are guaranteed to match in size and quality year after year.

  10. What are the benefits of giving a Princesse Pearl "Starter" necklace?
Girls outgrow toys and clothes but a Princesse pearl necklace will never go out of fashion and will be worn years from now with the wearer thinking of you each time they do.  It will become a family heirloom that will be valuable both for the sentimental value as well as the actual replacement cost.  It is recommended that the finished necklace be insured for replacement on your homeowners policy.
